Volunteering is a rewarding way to support the mission of New American Africans, and to provide help to children and families who live in Concord, NH. There are many ways in which you can offer your service
NAA’s Youth Program (A background check is required.):
Summer program: Each summer, our youth coordinator creates a program that keeps new American youth reading and speaking in English. We partner with host community youth, creating cross-cultural friendships. Always, as part of the program, we take a few trips. We start the summer with a friendly round-robin soccer tournament and cook out. If you or your child would like to be part of our summer program, contact us.
After school program: During the school year, we work with students two evenings a week. This is a time for fun, culturally rich activities. We have a dance class, but we also supplement that class with yoga classes, Zumba and board game evenings. Additionally, we always need help with transportation to any special events.
Translation: If you come from any of the countries where our refugees come from and you can speak both English and Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Swahili, French, Lingala or Arabic, you can assist in translation during meetings, and help with filling out applications, driving lessons, shopping and appointments..
Circle of Friends (Background check and training are required.): Work within a Circle of Friends to help a newly immigrated family or individual find their way in Concord. Activities will depend upon the makeup of individual families, but might include serving as a mentor for the parents as they try to understand the American school system, showing how to use a grocery store in the most cost-effective way, encouraging parents to get their children involved in low-cost activities such as park department sports teams and sharing some of the beautiful places in and around Concord. Older students often need support visiting and applying to college. A Circle of Friends might invite newcomers to share a Thanksgiving meal. They might be treated to a lesson on African cooking. This is an excellent way for a few American friends to work together with a new family. Individuals are encouraged to reach out to us; we are happy to find you other host community members to connect with.
Event Planning: NAA hosts Friday Family Fun Nights three times a year. Check the event page for an upcoming event. We also participate in the Concord Multicultural Festival. Volunteers are welcome to join our planning team, or to volunteer during the events.
